The only port from where you can take the ferry to Samothraki is Alexandroupolis, on the mainland. There has been a plan for many years to restore the connection to Kavala, but nothing concrete came out of it.
The ferry that makes the trip to and from Samothraki is called Adamantios Korais. The ship belonged to Zante Ferries until the autumn of 2024 when Fast Ferries bought it. FROM DECEMBER 5th, 2024, FAST FERRIES HAS BEEN THE COMPANY THAT PROVIDES FERRY SERVICE BETWEEN ALEXANDROUPOLI AND SAMOTHRAKI!

Samothraki ferry booking
Online bookings
You can book online ferry tickets to Samothraki (up to 2 hours before the trip) on the ferry company site using a debit/credit card. To make the reservations you will be prompted for the following information:
- number and name of the passengers;
- date of birth;
- nationality;
- contact information for one person (email, phone number);
- type of vehicle;
- registration number.
The tickets have the passenger's name printed on them. From the summer of 2023 onwards, the tickets you receive by mail are e-tickets and contain barcodes that are scanned for boarding. The ferry company recommends getting to the port at least one hour before the departure.
Buy tickets in person
You may also buy ferry tickets to Samothraki directly from the office in the port of Alexandroupoli. You will most likely find tickets, but there's also a chance that there aren't any tickets left for your ferry of choice - especially in high season. Also, there's a possibility that the economy tickets run out and you are left with only the more expensive ones.
In Samothraki tickets can be bought at the wooden kiosk in the port parking lot in Kamariotissa.
Bringing your pet on the ferry
Pets don't need a ticket. The ship has special areas for animals and for reasons pertaining to hygiene are not allowed indoors.
On the deck, dogs can't be left alone and are required to wear a leash and a muzzle.
Travelers must have the pet's up-to-date health card and are solely responsible for its care, hygiene and safety.
The ship Adamantios Korais
For over 20 years (up until 2019, when there were a number of problems), the link between the island of Samothraki and mainland Greece was serviced by Saos Ferries (in 2017 there was an attempt by CS Ferries to provide an alternative connection, but it hasn't materialized).
From 2019 to 2024, the company responsible for the route was Zante Ferries, with their ship Adamantios Korais. In the autumn of 2024, Fast Ferries bought the ship.
The vessel was built in 1987 in a Japanese ship yard and was used on various routes in Japan up until 2007 when it was bought by Zante Ferries. The ship was refurbished and modified. It takes its name after Adamantios Korais, a Greek writer who lived in the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th.
The ferry is painted white and bright orange and has the following specifications:
- length: 100 meters;
- width: 17 meters;
- maximum capacity: 1100 passengers and 250 cars;
- speed: 18.6 knots (35 km/h).
On the ferryboat to Samothraki
The only document you need to get on the ferry is the ticket. Passengers must get out of the car and board on foot.
Important! As of May 2024, Greece changed the rules for transporting electric cars and plug-in hybrids on the ferry. For electric and rechargeable hybrid (plug-in) vehicles, the battery temperature should be checked and the charge level must not exceed 40% of their total capacity. For vehicles using compressed natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), tanks should not be more than 50% full. The vehicles can not be connected to any source of electrical energy on board of the ferry.
The ferry is spacious and modern. There is a bar where you can buy a snack or something to drink while on route. Sandwiches cost 1.6-3.9€, pies 2.8€, a bottle of water 0.6€, soft drinks 2.3€, Greek coffee 1.5€, espresso 1.8€, frappe 2.4€, beer 2.7€ and various coffee based drinks (cappuccino, freddo cappuccino, freddo espresso) between 2.9 and 3.5€.
On the ship you'll meet all sorts of travelers - from barefooted hippies leaning on a huge backpack, to elderly tourist enamored by the island for many years, to locals bringing supplies from the mainland. It's not uncommon to see people dancing or doing yoga on the deck.
Even though it's summertime and it's warm, it would be advisable to have a windbreaker or hoodie on you and probably a cap or a hat if you plan on staying on the upper deck. A nice distraction on the trip are the seagulls following the ship (usually fed by people on board with biscuits and bread), the elusive dolphins that may follow the ship for short periods of time and the unmistakable silhouette of the island that grows bigger as you get closer.
After a two hour journey the ferry will lay anchor in the harbor of Kamariotissa in Samothraki. Once there, the journey continues by car, scooter or local buses.
Kales diakopes! ("Have a nice holiday!")
The schedules for after Sep 5 weren't announced yet. We will update the site as soon as the ferry company will make them public.
The timetable is only available till the 9th of November. For the moment the ship Proteus replaces Adamantios Korais.
As there are many problems with the weather these days, it's better to call Zante Ferries - 25510 82289.
You can read about it here (you can use Google Translate):

Is there a place to do a PCR test on the Island?
Thank you
It's difficult to say. Usually there are no problems to buy tickets on the spot, but if you want to be sure it's better to book in advance, especially in high season.
Yes, the ferry departs at 15.30 from Alexandroupoli for Samothraki. Normally you could buy tickets directly in the harbour, but in august there were some cases when the ship was full. So it depends...

The October ferry timetable for Alexandroupoli-Samothraki-Alexandroupoli has been published.
I don't know, it depends on the ferry company. Personally I think that it will be published in 7-10 days, but it's just a personal opinion.
The ferry company didn't announce yet the holiday schedules.
At the moment there is nothing announced, maybe it is too early. Please contact Zante Ferries at 25510 82289.
We are planning a trip to samothraki and I have two questions:
- Can I take a bicycle on the ferry? Do I need to pay extra for it? How much would that be if so?
- Is there a parking lot nearby the ferry terminal? How can I access its pricing list?
Thank you!
Best,
Martin
So if We leave the car at that parking lot for 9 days - we would pay 9 days x 3 EUR = 27 EUR? Is that correct?
Thank you.
I think Athens Car Rental allows you, but please check with them (www.athens-carrental.com). There is also the option to rent a car on the island.

The translation of the comment above (thank you, Irineos):
"Because there's great interest about the timetable after the 1st of June, I'd like to inform you that, this year, there was a second company that bid on the routes Alexandroupoli-Samothraki and Alexandroupoli-Samothraki-Limnos.
After the route was assigned to Zante Ferries, the second company contested the auction. According to the notice from the meeting of the Samothraki Municipal Council, until the dispute is resolved, Zante can't publish an official timetable.
I've written on my blog (irineossamothraki.blogspot.com) that the company might publish an unofficial timetable and if the dispute is resolved in their favor, that timetable would become official so that potential visitors could plan their holiday on the island.
Anyway, there will be at least one or two trips per day to Alexandroupoli and three a week to Limnos, so there's no need to worry. Both Zante and their ferry are trustworthy and there's no way things will return to the uncertainty of the past.
Thank you for hosting my reply InSamothraki."
when will the timetable for june will be published ?
Thank you
Please see the comment above.
Σήμερα ο πρόεδρος της εταιρείας ήταν καλεσμένος στο Samothraki Web Radio και είπε ότι προχθές τελείωσε δικαστικά η υπόθεση.
Is the timetable correct?
The timetable is correct. Off season there is no ferry on Wednesdays from Samothraki to Alexandroupoli.
Also which other ferry company is in line to get a 2nd route and when will that be announced? Its crazy there is only 1 boat ride per day to the Island and back.
You can buy ferry tickets on the spot. The island is quite empty these days.
Thanks in advance.
It is free to take the bike on the ferry.
Thank you!
The Samothraki ferry schedule for October was published.

As far as I know yes, there is a general transportation strike in Greece on the 17th of April. I'd recommend you send an email to alexandroupolis@zanteferries.gr and ask them directly.
Thank you very much for any hints!
Yes, off course there will be a ferry. Most probably the schedules will be published in the second part of September.
You can buy the tickets online from the ferry company site (zanteferries.gr/), but for the moment they only have the schedule till the 30th of September.
Yes, they have some important decisions to make.
