Fonias Beach is located at the mouth of the most important river in Samothraki. It's on the northern side of the island, 18 kilometers away from Kamariotissa (about 20 minutes by car), beyond Therma and the two campings of the island. To get there take a left on the first dirt road after the bridge over the river Fonias.
Fonias Beach is peaceful and remote, with white-grey stones and intense blue water. There are no amenities and fishermen can often be spotted on the shore.
On one side of the beach, on the right bank of the river, the ruins of a medieval defense tower still stand tall. The tower was built in the 15th century when the island was under the influence of the Genovese family Gateluzzi. Unfortunately, the wall facing the river collapsed during the catastrophic floods in the autumn of 2017. At the moment, the tower is undergoing an ample process of restoration and consolidation.
