Therma Beach and Saoki Beach Bar

Therma Beach and Saoki Beach Bar

Therma Beach is located in the north of the island, 13 kilometers away (about 15 minutes by car) from Kamariotissa and 700 meters from Therma village (the home of the most famous vathres in Samothraki).

There's a bus station nearby. The fishing port and a generous parking lot are right by the beach. Some time ago, in the 1950s, instead of the concrete dock, there was a wooden pier where the passenger ships from Alexandroupoli would drop their passengers. The small harbor got its final form around 2000. Unfortunately, it requires regular maintenance as it fills up constantly with sand and other debris.

The port is also the starting point for boat trips around the island. On one side of the dock, graffiti quotes the philosopher Heraclit: Ta Panta Rei ("Everything flows").

Therma Beach is quite wide and long and is covered mostly by rocks and gravel. Aqua shoes are a must. The water is clear and deepens quickly. The landscape is somewhat exotic - a green forest lies to the right and the majestic heights of Mount Saos fill the background. The area by the forest is popular with the naturists.

In season (usually July-August) Therma Beach is organized. There are sunbeds and reed umbrellas, showers, toilets and changing huts. Saoki Beach Bar is the most well-known bar on all the beaches of Samothraki. It opened in 1997 when it was the first beach bar on the island. In some evenings, there are live concerts. Check out the menu here.

To the left of the port there's a narrow stretch of pebbly beach. The underwater life might be a bit more interesting here for snorkeling enthusiasts.

What to visit near Therma Beach

In the port, to the right of the entrance of the parking lot, there's a small white chapel called Panagouda, with a blue door and ceramic tiles on the roof. It was built in 1958 by Captain Kardamilis from Chios Island and it's dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The legend goes that it was erected as a sign of gratitude after the captain survived a great storm. The church was built right on the shore, but the works on the harbor changed the shoreline and now the chapel is more inland.

The waterfalls and vathres on the two rivers that cross Therma - Gria Vathra and Tsivdogiannis are relatively close to the beach. The first couple of vathres are easily accessible, so in less than an hour you can take a dip in both the cold mountain water and the warm clear sea.

Where to eat nearby

If you're on the beach and want a quick snack, check out the food truck by the bar or the one (Mogli) in the parking lot by Chapel Panagouda.

Otherwise, a few steps further on the road to Kamariotissa, there is the fish taverna O Psaras. Just across the street there is Porti Maia, a cafe-bar and bistro.

Of course, you can take a quick walk to Therma village where there are even more taverns.

Accomodation near Therma beach

The closest are the hotels in Therma and the hotel Aigaion on the road to Kamariotissa. The two campings nearby are an affordable option, but they're a couple of kilometers away.
